The Fortress Hohensalzburg is located on a city hill above the city of Salzburg. At the same time, the fortress is the symbol of the city.
It is one of the oldest and largest castles in Europe and was built in 1077.
Initially, in the 11th century, only a church and a residential building, as well as a wall ring were built, but the fortress was extended in the following two centuries.
Burkhard II of Weisspriach, in his day a senior Salzburg archbishop, had extended the castle by four towers (bell tower, trumpet tower, round tower and Convict tower) in 1462.
Later, the wall was raised, a cistern was built for the water supply during possible sieges as well as some barrages. The construction measures were financed almost exclusively through income from salt mining.
During the Thirty Years’ War, it was possible to successfully defend against the attackers at the fortress Hohensalzburg.
After various renovation works at the beginning of the 19th century, the fortress became increasingly attractive for visitors and at the beginning of the 20th century it was already repositioned as the landmark of the city of Salzburg. The construction of the fortress railway at the end of the 19th century contributed significantly to this. The fortress railway is a cable car that overcomes the 100-meter difference in altitude to the fortress over a distance of just under 200 meters.
Due to its good and attractive location, Hohensalzburg is a “tourist magnet”. The well-developed infrastructure, including the cable car, also contributes to this.
The Hotel zur Post and the Villa Ceconi are particularly recommended, they are in the immediate vicinity and offer the guest a pleasant stay. Both hotels are only 150 meters apart and share many facilities. From the hotels it is a 25-minute walk to the historic city. Parking spaces (free of charge) are also provided and those who do not arrive with their own car, or simply want to make a nice tour, have the possibility to rent bicycles.
Both hotels have been built in the style of a “typical Salzburg town house” and offer every imaginable comfort in the rooms.
The hotels can be easily reached from the airport by bus, taxi or car.
