Finally, it is summertime and this means that the barbecue season is opened! Nonetheless the eagerly anticipated grilling does not necessarily have to involve masses of meat, charcoal from South America and quantities of aluminium foil and plastic tableware. We will reveal how you can do your barbecue in a sustainable way and every bit as delicious as usually.
Meatless barbecuing does not have to restrict itself to vegetables on skewers or squeaky barbecue cheese from the supermarket. On the contrary! A vegetarian BBQ is even much more versatile than the customary sausages and steaks. And this already starts with the side dishes: from baguette and roast potatoes via grilled flatbread with garlic butter and corn cobs through to noodle salad and couscous – the possibilities are almost endless. On the brazier you can put tasty feta-tomato-packages with herbs wrapped in grape leaves, goat cheese with figs and honey, courgette slices in a cheese-herb-mixture or quesadillas filled with tomatoes, spring onions, cheese and sour cream. All this sounds mouth watering completely without meat, doesn’t it? You will find numerous creative and delicious BBQ-recipes here.
Moreover, you should take care of purchasing domestic barbecue coal, ideally of beechwood, that carries an environmental sigil. Only then, you can be sure that the coal does not originate from illegal rainforest clearance in South America or Africa. Instead, you could also heat your brazier with briquettes of olive stones or grape vines. This is not only a sustainable alternative, but also provides an interesting flavour and produces less sparks. For heating up the barbecue, you should take your time and use certificated grill lighters or wood instead of the harmful petrol. In case that you are planning a BBQ at the lake instead of your own garden, you should get informed about the places where it is allowed to grill and take care of the fire regulations. If your beautiful porcelain is too good to bring it to the party, you should buy sustainable single-use tableware and avoid packed groceries and foil pans. Finally, all the garbage should be deposed correctly, of course and the sustainable barbecue party will be a complete success for sure!
We wish you a lot of fun with your upcoming vegetarian and eco friendly BBQ!
